Hire me
Please contact me to learn about my current availability. My main areas of expertise and interest are listed below.
Modern Software for Laboratory Automation
Automated biotech laboratories consist of tens to hundreds pieces of hardware and a litany of databases and IT system. After procurement, process design, and mechanical engineering is done, it’s the software that makes the system run correctly and efficiently—or not. If you are building a lab, I can help you buy or build the software that fits your lab’s requirements. If you are building an instrument, I can help you create an integration-friendly software API.
Full(er) Stack Engineering
The term “full stack engineer” usually refers to someone who can work in both frontend and backend software. Let’s talk if your software project goes one step further and also interfaces with the physical world, for example IoT devices or industrial automation controllers. I can help you build bridges across the infamous IT/OT divide—from apps and cloud to PLCs, conveyors, and vision systems.
Engineering Management (Interim or Fractional)
I have been engineering manager (for software engineers and others) at two Bay Area startups and have helped others become engineering manager. If you need to fill an engineering manager gap in your org chart, you can hire me as an interim manager to set up a team or keep an existing one going. If your engineering org is small, you can hire me as “second opinion” for your existing engineering manager(s). This can be “just talk” or very hands-on, for example writing career ladders, developing onboarding plans, selecting and configuring tools.
Python
I have used Python professionally since 2013, most recently on the team that maintains the boto3 SDK at AWS. While I prefer to use Python in service of the applications mentioned above, I can help you with existing code (code reviews, legacy code upgrades, migrations) and new code (prototypes, evaluation of tools and libraries, code writing).
Modes of Engagement
For technical work I prefer to define projects by outcomes instead of an hourly rate. For engineering management work I generally look for engagements of no more than 20 hours/week and with a finite time horizon.
Recruiters: I am not currently looking for staff augmentation or contract-to-hire roles.
